1941: Soccer

During the season of 1940-41, Soccer, the Fall to Spring kicking game, was played by 1,176 teams in almost 200 leagues and cup competitions throughout the country. The number of players participating approximated some 25,000 amateurs and 500 professionals.

The following are the results of the various national championships:

National (Open) Championship:

Played on a home-and-home basis:

At Pawtucket, R. I., May 4:

Pawtucket F.C., Pawtucket, R. I., 4 goals,

Chrysler S.C., Detroit, Mich., 2 goals.

At Detroit, Mich., May 11:

Chrysler S.C., Detroit, Mich., 3 goals,

Pawtucket, S.C., Pawtucket, R. I., 4 goals.

Final Result: Pawtucket F.C., 8 goals; Chrysler, 5 goals.

National Amateur Championship:

At Fall River, Mass., May 25:

Fall River S.C., Fall River, 2 goals,

Chrysler S.C., Detroit, Mich., 1 goal.

National Junior Championship:

At Philadelphia, Pa., May 4:

Mercerville Boys' Club, Mercerville, N. J., 2 goals,

Kensington Recreation Club, Philadelphia, 1 goal.

American (Prof.) Soccer League: *Scots American S.C., Kearny, N. J. (*Champions for fifth successive season).

Lewis (Prof.) Cup: First German American S.C. Philadelphia, Pa.

Peel Challenge Cup: Viking Athletic Association, Chicago, Ill.

New York State Cup: German Hungarian F.C., Brooklyn, N. Y.

The Botafoga F.C. of Rio de Janeiro, national champions of Brazil, met a team selected from the clubs of the American Soccer League on March 23, at New York city, and were defeated by a score of 3 goals to 1.

1940: Soccer

Over 1,200 soccer teams composing almost 200 leagues and cup competitions, and comprised of over 25,000 registered amateur players and some 450 professionals, engaged in this great fall-to-spring sport under the jurisdiction of the United States Football Association during the 1939-40 season.

The following are the results of the several National Soccer championships:

National (Open) Championship, played on a home-and-home basis:

At Baltimore, May 5: Baltimore S.C., Baltimore, 0 goals; Sparta A.B.A., Chicago, 0 goals.

At Chicago, May 12: Sparta A.B.A., Chicago, 2 goals; Baltimore S.C., Baltimore, 2 goals.

Because of the many difficulties encountered, no third contest was played and no national champion determined. Instead, the Baltimore Soccer Club was named the Eastern Divisional champion and the Sparta A.B.A. the Western Divisional champion.

National Amateur Championship:

At North Tiverton, R. I., May 5: Morgan Strasser S.C., Morgan, Pa., 1 goal; Firestone F.C., Fall River, Mass., 0 goal.

National Junior Championship:

At Brooklyn, N. Y., May 19th: Avella Junior S.C., Avella, Pa., 1 goal; Yorkville Junior A.C., New York, N. Y., 0 goal.

1939: Soccer

The following are the results of the various national championships: —

NATIONAL (OPEN) CHAMPIONSHIP, played on a home-and-home basis: 1938-39 — At Chicago, Ill., April 30, 1939; St. Mary's Celtic S.C., Brooklyn, N. Y., 1; Manhattan Beer S.C., Chicago, Ill., 0; referee, James Carlton, Buffalo, N. Y. At New York City, May 7, 1939: St. Mary's Celtic S.C., 4; Manhattan Beer S.C., 1; referee, James Carlton, Buffalo.

NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP: 1938-39 — At Fall River, Mass., May 14, 1939: St. Michael's A.C., Fall River, Mass., 3; Gallatin S.C., Gallatin, Pa., 1; referee, Philip Fox, Brooklyn, N. Y.

NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: At New York City, June, 18: Avella Polar Stars, Avella, Pa., 3 goals; Apache S.C., Baltimore, Md., 2 goals.

1938: Soccer

Football is played in the United States under the jurisdiction of the United States Football Association with headquarters in New York City. During the season of 1937-38 there were 1,256 clubs in operation throughout the country with 25,000 players participating in 190 leagues and cup competitions. There are 26 affiliated state associations, together with the following associate members: Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, New York City; Athletic Federation of Tampa, Florida; Intercollegiate Soccer Football Association of America, Philadelphia, Pa.; National Collegiate Athletic Association, Philadelphia, Pa.; Public Schools Athletic League, New York City.

The following are the results of the various National Championships:

NATIONAL (OEEN) CHAMPIONSHIP, played on a home-and-home basis: At Chicago, April 17: Sparta A.B.A., Chicago, 3 goals; St. Mary's Celtic, Brooklyn, 0 goals. At New York, April 24: Sparta A.B.A., Chicago, 3 goals; St. Mary's Celtic, Brooklyn, 2 goals. Final result: Sparta A.B.A., 6 goals; St. Mary's Celtic, 2 goals.

NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. At Fall River, May 1st: Ponta Delgada, S.C., Fall River, 2 goals; Heidelberg, S. C., Heidelberg, Pa., 1 goal.

NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. At Philadelphia, May 29: Lighthouse Blues, Philadelphia, 1 goal; Beadling Juniors, Beadling, Pa., 0 goals.

The Chicago Spartas, new national champions, reached the Western divisional finals on six different occasions and finally crashed through to clinch the open title at the sixth attempt. It is the only Chicago club to accomplish this feat in the twenty-five years of open competition.
