1940: Soccer

Over 1,200 soccer teams composing almost 200 leagues and cup competitions, and comprised of over 25,000 registered amateur players and some 450 professionals, engaged in this great fall-to-spring sport under the jurisdiction of the United States Football Association during the 1939-40 season.

The following are the results of the several National Soccer championships:

National (Open) Championship, played on a home-and-home basis:

At Baltimore, May 5: Baltimore S.C., Baltimore, 0 goals; Sparta A.B.A., Chicago, 0 goals.

At Chicago, May 12: Sparta A.B.A., Chicago, 2 goals; Baltimore S.C., Baltimore, 2 goals.

Because of the many difficulties encountered, no third contest was played and no national champion determined. Instead, the Baltimore Soccer Club was named the Eastern Divisional champion and the Sparta A.B.A. the Western Divisional champion.

National Amateur Championship:

At North Tiverton, R. I., May 5: Morgan Strasser S.C., Morgan, Pa., 1 goal; Firestone F.C., Fall River, Mass., 0 goal.

National Junior Championship:

At Brooklyn, N. Y., May 19th: Avella Junior S.C., Avella, Pa., 1 goal; Yorkville Junior A.C., New York, N. Y., 0 goal.
