Midway Islands, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean belonging to the United States, are situated about 1,200 miles northwest of Hawaii at 28°12' N. lat. and 177°22' W. long. They have an area of 28 sq. mi. The population in 1936 numbered 118. The islands are the seat of a relay cable station and since 1935 have formed a base for the trans-Pacific service of the Pan American Airways. The archipelago is under the Navy Department.
