1941: Weight Lifting

Four of the six strong men titles for the national A. A. U. weightlifting championships were won by old favorites during the competitions in the Philadelphia Arena. John Davis broke two American records in capturing heavyweight laurels. He did 317 pounds in the two-arm snatch and 321 pounds in the two-arm military press. Westley Cochrane, bantamweight, lifted 616 pounds, and Frank Kay won the light heavyweight honors at 850 pounds. Davis also captured the heavyweight crown at 1,010 pounds, and Tony Terlazzo took welterweight laurels with 800 pounds. John Terry accounted for the lightweight crown with a total lift of 665 pounds. John Grimek, veteran performer, won the 'Mr. America' contest.
