1940: Trapshooting

Registered trapshooting had a good season during 1940 in spite of a number of tournaments cancelled by bad weather in the spring. While at this writing the scores are not complete, it looks as if Mr. W. F. Harder of Lincoln, Nebraska, will be the high average winner with 2279 x 2300 for an average of .9908.

In the National Championship this year several new winners appeared. The event which is held for the Champions of each State was won by Sam H. Sharman of Salt Lake City, Utah, with a score of 99 x 100. The Senior Race for contestants over seventy years of age was won by John B. Fontaine, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with the score of 98 x 100. The Sub-Junior Championship for contestants under fifteen was won by E. C. Colosky of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, with 88 x 100. The Junior Championship for contestants under eighteen years of age was won by John Snow Martin of Providence, Kentucky, with 99 x 100. The Women's National Championship was won by Mrs. Lela Hall of Strasburg, Missouri, with 97 x 100.

The Amateur Clay Target Championship of North America at sixteen-yards was won by Forest W. McNeir of Houston, Texas, with the score of 200 x 200. The Preliminary Handicap was won by Roy W. Miller of Grove City, Minnesota, with 100 x 100 at twenty yards, while the Grand American was won by E. H. Wolfe of Charleston, West Virginia, with 98 x 100 from twenty-three yards. H. L. Cheek of Clinton, Indiana, was high over all on the complete program with 1131 x 1200, and Indiana won the State Team Race with 981 x 1000. The Doubles Championship went to E. L. Hawkins, Fort Wayne, Indiana, with 98 x 100, and the Professional Championship was won by Fred Tomlin of Glassboro, New Jersey, with 196 x 200. The Husband and Wife event was captured by Mr. and Mrs. Van N. Marker of Evanston, Illinois, with the combined score of 189 x 200. The Father and Son event was won by Dr. I. S. and Ned Lilly of Stanton, Michigan, with the combined score of 193 x 200. The attendance at the 1940 Grand American showed a substantial increase. Eighty-five thousand more targets were trapped this year.
