Wake Island, in the North Pacific, annexed by the United States in 1898, is situated 2,130 miles west of Hawaii at 19° N. lat. and 166°20' E. long. It is a coral atoll with an area of about 2,600 acres. Since 1935 it has been an important air base for the trans-Pacific service of Pan American Airways. The island is under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Navy Department. Owing to the excessive cost of transporting vegetables to the island, a system of growing vegetables by chemical solutions (hydroponics) has been devised, which is proving very successful.
