Unfederated Malay States, five states under British protection, occupy a portion of the Malay Peninsula which extends from Asia into the China Sea.
Except in Johore where Chinese predominate, the inhabitants are principally of Malay extraction, followed in size of population by Chinese and East Indians. The chief products are coconuts, rubber, rice, areca, coffee, pineapples, tapioca, and timber. Tin ore and iron ore are mined. The trade is almost entirely with the Straits Settlements. Each of the five states is ruled by a sultan, assisted by a State Council and a British adviser. All of the states possess an exceptionally good balance of trade which was little affected during 1939 by the European War.
