Registered trapshooting was notably increased during the year 1939, 686 more shooters participating in official events than in 1938.
At the National Championship several new winners appeared. The event which is held for the champions of each state was won by Walter Peterson of Lynn, Mass., with a score of 100 x 100. The Senior Race for contestants over seventy years of age was won by John Peterson of Randall, Iowa, with the score of 96 x 100. The Sub-junior Championship for contestants under fifteen went to Ray Fienup of St. Louis, Mo., with 98 x 100. The Junior Championship for contestants under eighteen years of age was captured by Rudy Etchen of Kansas City with 97 x 100.
The Women's National Championship was secured by Mrs. William Gilbert of Madison, Wis., with 98 x 100.
The Amateur Clay Target Championship of North America at sixteen-yards was won by P. O. Harbage, West Jefferson, Ohio, with the score of 200 x 200. He also won the Open Championship, with the same score.
The Preliminary Handicap was won by Walter Winteringham of Barrington, Ill., with 99 x 100 at twenty-two yards; the Grand American Handicap went to D. L. Ritchie of Goshen, Ohio, with 99 x 100 from twenty-two yards, and Phil Miller of French Lick, Ind., was high over all on the complete program with 880 x 900.
The State Team Race was won by Ohio with 984 x 1000. In the doubles championship John D. Rigg of Conshohocken, Pa., was winner with 97 x 100; while the Professional Championship was secured by Fred Tomlin of Glassboro, N. J., with 199 x 200. He also is high professional for the year with 2433 x 2450 for the average of .9930.
In the Husband and Wife event, Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders of Keyser, W. Va., were victors with the combined score of 382 x 400. Attendance at the 1939 Grand American compared favorably with that of former years.
