1939: Manufacturing Industries

The manufacturing industries of the United States in 1937 employed 19 per cent more operatives than in 1935, who were paid 38.3 per cent more in wages. The cost of materials increased 34.4 per cent. The combined value of the products in 1937 exceeded the 1935 total by 34.9 per cent.

The value of the products manufactured in the United States in 1937 totaled $60,710,072,958, as compared with $44,993,698,573 in 1935. The 'value added by manufacture' (calculated by subtracting cost of materials, fuel, electric energy, and contract work from value of products) for 1937 was $25,173,933,310, an increase of 35.7 per cent over the 1935 value of $18,553,279,851.
