Thirty-three more registered tournaments were held during 1938 than in 1937, and there were 255 more members in the Amateur Trapshooting Association. The Grand American was held Aug. 22 to 26 inclusive.
Joe Hiestand of Hillsboro, Ohio broke the record on 900 16-yard targets without a miss. He had a carry over of 66 straight unfinished from Yorklyn, Del., and he continued this run at Carmel, Ind., to 1,179 straight. This is the world's record. Boyd Duncan of Lucy, Tenn., was the former holder of this record with 621. Fred Tomlin of New Jersey completed a run of 714 early in the week of the Grand American only to be excelled by Hiestand's wonderful shooting.
Mark Hootman of Hicksville, Ohio, won the Champion of Champions race in the 1938 Grand, with 100 straight in the regular event and 221 x 225 in a shoot-off with Walter Beaver, Ed Luyben, Ned Lilly, Phil Miller and Franklin Beck.
Joe Hiestand won the Amateur Clay-Target Championship with 200 x 200 after a shoot-off with Ned Lilly.
Lela Hall of Strasburg, Mo., won the Women's Clay-Target Championship with 195 x 200, the 4th straight year she has won this event.
Fred Etchen of Wichita, Kan., won the Doubles race with 96 x 100; Rudy Etchen of Wichita, Kan., the Junior Championship with 98 x 100; and Ray Fienup of St. Louis, Mo., the Sub-Junior Championship with 98 x 100.
E. E. Bush of Tallahassee, Fla., won the Veteran's Race with 192 x 200, and Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders of Keyser, W. Va., won the Husband and Wife event with 379 x 400.
The State Team Race was won by Pennsylvania with 983 x 1000. The Professional Singles Championship by Karl Maust of Columbus, Ohio, with 199 x 200. Captain J. B. Grier of Rockland, Del., won the Professional's Doubles Championship with 98 x 100.
The winner of the Preliminary Handicap was L. R. Slagle — 98 x 100 — after the shoot-off with Dr. M. E. Hagerty, Paul Spargur and C. C. Bunn.
The Grand American was won by O. W. West of Coshocton, Ohio, with 99 x 100 after a shoot-off with Parr Rhines of Marseilles, Ill.
Phil Miller of French Lick, Ind., is high average shot on 16-yards for the year with 9898 average; Fred Tomlin, high professional with 9922 average.
