1938: Dog Shows

In the sixty-second annual Westminster Kennel Club's all-breed exhibition, the leading indoor dog show of the United States, held Feb. 12, 1938, at Madison Square Gardens, New York, five of the six variety group titles were won by United States bred dogs, the first time in the history of the show that American bred dogs had so overwhelmingly placed.

The winner of the best-in-show title, highest award in the exhibitions was Champion Daro of Mirador, an eleven-month-old orange belton heavily ticked English setter, bred and owned by the Mirador Kennels belonging to Dwight W. Ellis of East Longmeadow, Mass. Champion Daro, the son of Sturdy Max and Lakeland Dawn, held the distinction of being the first American-bred dog in ten years to have won the Westminster exhibition's highest award. No second choice among the group champions was indicated. The group champions were as follows: of the toy dogs, Champion Kai Lo of Dah Lyn, a Pekingese, owned by John B. Royce placed first. Champion Hertsville Headstone, a collie owned by C. J. Cassleman and Thomas M. Halpin took the title among the working dogs. Of the hounds. Champion Fox vom Teckelhof, owned by the llieno Kennels ranked first. Of the terriers, Stanley J. Halle's wire-haired fox terrier Champion Flornell Spicypiece of Halleston, the only foreign-bred winner, was adjudged the best; and of the non-sporting dogs, Champion Pillicoc Rumpelstiltskin, owned by the Pillicoc Kennels took first place.

In the Morris and Essex Kennel Club's twelfth annual all-breed exhibitions, the leading outdoor dog show in the United States and the largest outdoor one-day dog show in the world, held May 28, 1938 at Madison, N. J., 4,000 dogs of approximately 190 breeds were benched for judging. The winner of the supreme award, the best-in-show title, was Champion Ideal Weather, Old English Sheep dog, owned by Leonard Collins of Toronto. In the groups, Maro of Mirador, English setter, was judged first of the sporting dogs. Of the toy dogs, Mrs. Vincent Matta's Sealaud Money-box ranked first. Champion Vigow of Romanoff owned by Louis J. Murr took the title among the hounds. Champion Blakeen Jungfrau of Blakeen Kennels won the non-sporting dogs group title, and among the terriers, Wissaboo Kennels' Champion Nornay Saddler was adjudged first.
